After Serbia's defeat in fall 1915 its army and many civilians flee to the sea in winter through a hostile Albanian population. At home public opinion is agitated by mismanagement, severe food shortages, and the seemingly endless war. These groups were encouraged by Russian agents, as well as individuals in the Serbian government, public service and military. Turkey was defeated in a matter of weeks against the unified powers of Greece and Crete. Became ruler of Germany in 1888 and dramatically changed Germany's foreign policy.

Despite the loss, the retreat was successful and the Serbian Army remained operational in Greece with a newly established base.
The Allies however regrouped and attacked the Germans northeast of their location the valley of the Marne. However, Turkey still controlled parts of the balkans. On June 28th, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand reached the capital of Bosnia Sarajevo and was shot by Gavrilo Princip.
The Balkan peninsula was that of great importance due to its territorial and economic significance; however, the Balkan States consisted of many proud ethnic cultures who did not wish to be ruled by any authority other than themselves. One of the things that made Hitler as successful as he was was the fact that not only did he have a country based on nationalism, making them more liable to attack other countries, but they were also a country based upon militarism. It quickly finds itself in a losing war against all four of its neighbors. Others Hungarians, Slovaks, Germans, Romanians, and still more settled these lands along with the Serbs, making the population ethnically ambiguous. Their location made the Balkans strategically important, so European powers were focused on events there. Bulgaria, recuperating from the , sat out the first year of World War I. However, the Romanian and Russian armies managed to stabilize the front and hold on to. The Serbs became furious and proclaimed war because they felt threatened by this act. Serbian armies conquer the greater part of Macedonia from the Ottomans in the First Balkan War, and gain additional bits from the Bulgarians in the Second. By October 1918 his army had and was preparing to invade Hungary proper. Bulgaria is located along the Black Sea; its capital is Sofia.
It remains occupied for the rest of the war. Any sign of independent thinking within the church was persecuted as a danger to temporal as well as spiritual power, and this hindered the development of those forms of exchange that later proved vital to the flowering of intellectual life in the West—Catholic Croatia-Slavonia and Dalmatia included. On this land mass was a cluster of nations and provinces, including Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Bosnia.
